Australia Skilled Independent Visa (189): Complete Guide for Sri Lankans
What is the Subclass 189?
The Skilled Independent Visa (Subclass 189) is a permanent residence visa for skilled workers who are not sponsored by an employer or family member and are not nominated by a state or territory government. It is points-tested and processed through the SkillSelect system.
Minimum Points Required
The minimum score to be invited is 65 points, but due to high demand, most invitation rounds in 2024–2025 require 80–90+ points. Points are awarded for:
- Age (maximum 30 points for 25–32 year olds)
- English proficiency (Superior English = 20 points)
- Skilled work experience overseas and in Australia
- Educational qualifications
- Australian study
- Partner skills
- Community language (Sinhalese qualifies)
Step 1 — Skills Assessment
Before submitting an Expression of Interest (EOI), you need a positive skills assessment from the relevant assessing body (e.g., Engineers Australia, VETASSESS, ACS for IT, AHPRA for healthcare).
Step 2 — English Test
You need IELTS Academic with a minimum of 6.0 in each band (for base 10 points) or 7.0+ in each band (for 10 extra points). PTE Academic and OET are also accepted.
Step 3 — Submit EOI via SkillSelect
Lodge your Expression of Interest at my.gov.au. Invitations are issued in rounds — usually monthly. The higher your score, the sooner you receive an invitation.
Step 4 — Apply Within 60 Days
Once invited, you have 60 days to lodge the full visa application. Government fee: AUD 4,640 for the primary applicant.
Processing Time
Currently 12–24 months for most occupations. High-demand occupations on the priority processing list can be faster.
Key Tip for Sri Lankans
Claiming Sinhalese as a community language can add 5 points if you hold a NAATI credential. This small boost can move you ahead in competitive rounds.
