Canada Express Entry for Sri Lankans: How the Points System Works
What is Express Entry?
Express Entry manages applications for three federal economic immigration programmes: the Federal Skilled Worker Program (FSWP), the Federal Skilled Trades Program (FSTP), and the Canadian Experience Class (CEC). Applicants submit a profile and receive a Comprehensive Ranking System (CRS) score.
How the CRS Score Works
The CRS awards up to 1,200 points across four categories:
- Core human capital factors (up to 500 points): age, education, Canadian work experience, official language proficiency
- Spouse/partner factors (up to 40 points)
- Skill transferability (up to 100 points): combination of education + language, or work experience + language
- Additional factors (up to 600 points): provincial nomination = 600 points, valid job offer = 50–200 points
What Score Do You Need?
Cutoff scores fluctuate based on the number of candidates in the pool. In 2024–2025, most general draws have invited candidates with scores of 480–525. Category-based draws (healthcare, STEM, trades, French proficiency, agriculture) often have lower cutoffs of 430–470.
English Requirements
You need IELTS General Training with CLB 7 in each component (Listening 8.0, Reading 7.0, Writing 7.5, Speaking 7.5) for the FSWP. Higher scores earn significantly more points.
Tips for Sri Lankan Applicants
- French proficiency (TEF Canada) can boost your score dramatically — even A2 French adds points
- A Provincial Nominee Program (PNP) nomination adds 600 CRS points, almost guaranteeing an ITA
- Work experience in NOC TEER 0, 1, 2, or 3 categories qualifies
- Sri Lankan degrees from recognised universities are accepted; use World Education Services (WES) for an Educational Credential Assessment (ECA)
Government Fee
CAD 1,365 (principal applicant) + CAD 1,365 (spouse) + CAD 260 (per dependent child). The Right of Permanent Residence Fee (RPRF) of CAD 515 is paid upon approval.
