Canada Express Entry for Sri Lankans: 2025 Points, Process & Timeline
Canada's Express Entry system is the fastest pathway to Canadian permanent residency for skilled workers. Sri Lankans have been increasingly successful in this system, particularly in IT, healthcare, and engineering.
The Three Federal Programs
- Federal Skilled Worker (FSW): For professionals with skilled work experience. Most Sri Lankans apply under this stream.
- Canadian Experience Class (CEC): For those already working in Canada on a work permit.
- Federal Skilled Trades (FST): For tradespersons with a qualifying offer or certificate.
Comprehensive Ranking System (CRS) Score
The CRS score is calculated from core factors (age, education, work experience, language) and additional factors (provincial nomination, arranged employment, sibling in Canada). In 2024–2025, category-based draws have been common, targeting specific occupations like healthcare, STEM, and trades.
Language Requirements
IELTS General Training or CELPIP is required. The FSW minimum is CLB 7 (roughly IELTS 6.0 each band). Higher scores improve CRS significantly — CLB 9 (IELTS 7.0 each band) adds 136–138 points for a single applicant.
Educational Credential Assessment (ECA)
Sri Lankan degrees must be assessed by a designated body (WES is most common). WES assessments take 7–10 business days for digital documents and cost CAD 265. Always get a course-by-course evaluation if applying for FSW.
Timeline
After receiving an Invitation to Apply (ITA): You have 60 days to submit the full PR application. IRCC targets 6-month processing for 80% of applications received. Total timeline from profile creation to PR landing: typically 12–18 months.
