Germany Job Seeker Visa 2025: Sri Lanka to Europe
Germany is actively recruiting skilled workers from outside the EU. The Job Seeker Visa (Jobsuchvisum) is a 6-month visa that allows you to enter Germany and look for a job matching your qualifications — without needing a job offer beforehand.
Eligibility Requirements
- University degree recognised in Germany OR a qualified vocational qualification (at least 2 years)
- Proof of financial means: at least EUR 1,027/month (can be in a blocked account)
- B1 level German OR B2 English proficiency
- Valid health insurance for the 6-month stay
Degree Recognition
Sri Lankan university degrees must be checked on the anabin database. Many Sri Lankan degrees from University of Colombo, University of Moratuwa, and University of Peradeniya are partially recognised. NARIC Germany may require additional qualification assessment through the relevant professional body.
The Opportunity Card (Chancenkarte)
From June 2024, Germany introduced the Opportunity Card — a points-based alternative to the Job Seeker Visa. You need 6 points from a combination of: German language skills, experience, age, prior Germany connection, and vocational qualification. This is more flexible than the traditional Job Seeker Visa.
After Arrival
Once you find a job, your employer helps convert your visa to a residence permit for employment. You'll also need to register your address (Anmeldung) within 14 days of arrival — required for all German residents.
Key Sectors Hiring
IT and software, mechanical engineering, electrical engineering, healthcare (nurses urgently needed), hospitality, and construction. Many companies list vacancies on the Make it in Germany portal run by the German government.
