UAE Employment Visa Guide for Sri Lankans (2025)
How UAE Work Visas Work
Unlike many Western countries, the UAE does not have a points-based or self-petition system. Your employer applies for your Employment (Residence) Visa on your behalf. The process has two stages: entry permit → medical and Emirates ID → residence visa stamped in passport.
Step-by-Step Process
- Job Offer — Secure employment with a UAE-registered company. Ensure your offer letter is signed and the company holds a valid trade licence.
- Entry Permit — Employer applies to MOHRE and GDRFA. Processing: 1–2 weeks. You can enter the UAE on this permit.
- Status Change — If entering on a visit visa, your employer changes your status inside the country.
- Medical Test — Mandatory fitness test at a MOHRE-approved clinic (blood test, chest X-ray). Cost: AED 320–400.
- Emirates ID — Biometric registration at an ICA service centre. Fee: AED 100–370 depending on visa duration.
- Residence Visa — Stamped in your passport. Valid for 2 years (renewable).
Costs
Government fees total approximately AED 1,000–1,500 (USD 272–408) for a 2-year visa. Most employers cover these costs — confirm this in your contract before accepting an offer.

Important Warnings
Never pay an agent in Sri Lanka to "secure" a UAE job. Legitimate UAE employers do not charge workers any recruitment fees. If someone asks you to pay upfront for a job offer, it is likely a scam. Always verify an employer's trade licence on the UAE Ministry of Economy website before signing any contract.
