UAE Work Visa 2025: What Every Sri Lankan Needs to Know
The UAE is home to over 200,000 Sri Lankan workers, making it one of the most popular destinations for employment migration. The process has been significantly streamlined in recent years.
Types of UAE Work Visas
- Employment Visa (2 years): Standard work visa sponsored by your employer. Most Sri Lankan workers use this pathway.
- Mission Visa (3 months): For project-based work. Can be extended.
- Golden Visa (10 years): For investors, skilled professionals, and outstanding graduates. Salary threshold typically USD 4,000+/month.
- Green Visa (5 years): For skilled employees, freelancers, and self-employed. Salary threshold AED 15,000/month.
The Employment Visa Process
Your UAE employer handles most of the process. They apply for an entry permit, which allows you to enter the UAE on a 60-day visa. Within those 60 days, you complete your medical examination, Emirates ID registration, and visa stamping at GDRFA.
Medical Examination
All expatriate workers must undergo a medical examination at an approved centre. This tests for tuberculosis and HIV. Positive results lead to visa cancellation — ensure your health is cleared before travelling.
Cost Breakdown
Most employment visa costs are borne by the employer under UAE law. However, some industries still see workers paying recruitment fees in Sri Lanka. Be cautious of agencies charging above LKR 75,000 — this may violate Sri Lanka Bureau of Foreign Employment (SLBFE) regulations.
SLBFE Registration
All Sri Lankans going abroad for employment must register with the SLBFE and obtain a clearance. This protects you legally and ensures access to welfare services. The clearance costs around LKR 2,500.
