UK Skilled Worker Visa 2025: Salary Thresholds and How to Qualify

20 May 2025

The UK Skilled Worker visa replaced the Tier 2 (General) visa and remains the primary route for Sri Lankan professionals to work in the UK. Major changes came in April 2024 with significantly raised salary thresholds.

2024/2025 Salary Thresholds

The general threshold was raised to GBP 38,700/year (up from GBP 26,200). Healthcare workers have a lower threshold of GBP 29,000. New entrants (recent graduates or under 26) can qualify at 70% of the occupation-specific threshold. These changes were intended to reduce net migration numbers.

Job Offer Requirement

You must have a confirmed job offer from a UK employer with a Sponsor Licence. The employer assigns you a Certificate of Sponsorship (CoS) — a unique reference number used in your visa application. You cannot self-sponsor or look for work on arrival.

English Language Requirement

Sri Lankan nationals must prove English language ability at B1 level (CEFR). This is usually satisfied by IELTS SELT with a score of 4.0 in each component, or an approved English-speaking country degree.

Healthcare Workers

NHS and private healthcare are actively recruiting from Sri Lanka. Nurses need to pass the Objective Structured Clinical Examination (OSCE) and NMC registration. Doctors need GMC registration. Both have specific visa pathways with lower salary thresholds.

Processing Times

Standard: 3 weeks (15 business days). Priority service: 5 business days. Super-priority: 1 business day (limited availability). Apply at a UKVI application centre — the closest for Sri Lankans is in Colombo.
