Universal public healthcare (Medicare)
Medicare covers GP visits, specialist consultations, public hospital treatment, and most pathology at no or low cost. Prescription medicines are subsidised under the PBS (Pharmaceutical Benefits Scheme).
Sri Lankan migrants on a Skilled visa (subclass 189, 190, 482 etc.) gain Medicare access from day one. Working Holiday makers and temporary visitors are NOT covered.
Overseas Visitor Health Cover (OVHC) is mandatory for most temporary visa holders. For PR holders, Medicare covers most needs but extras (dental, optical, physio) require private insurance. Popular funds: Medibank, Bupa, AHM, HCF. Family extras cover averages AUD 150–250/month.
