Universal Public Health (Sozialversicherung / OGK)
Austria has a comprehensive social health insurance system administered by the Austrian Health Insurance Fund (OGK). Contributions are mandatory for all employed persons. The system covers GP visits, specialist care, hospitalisation, and most medications. Patient co-payments are minimal.
All employees in Austria are automatically enrolled in OGK through their employer payroll contributions (approximately 7.65% employee + 7.65% employer of gross salary). Coverage begins on the first day of employment. Family members (spouse, children) can be co-insured at no extra cost. Self-employed persons register with the Social Insurance Institution for the Self-Employed (SVS).
Supplementary private insurance: UNIQA, Wiener Stadtische, Generali Austria, Allianz Austria. Monthly cost: EUR 30-100.
