Universal Public Health (RIZIV / INAMI Mutual Insurance)
Belgium has a compulsory social health insurance system administered through recognised mutual insurance funds (mutualiteiten/mutuelles). All employed persons must join one of the five national mutualities or the auxiliary fund. The system covers 75-100% of approved medical costs.
Work permit holders employed in Belgium are automatically enrolled in social security, which includes health insurance. You must register with a mutuality within 6 months of starting work. Coverage begins upon registration. The preferred status (verhoogde tegemoetkoming) offers additional subsidies for lower-income families.
The five national mutualities: CM (Christelijke Mutualiteit), Mutualite Socialiste, Mutualite Liberale, Mutualite Neutre, Mutualite Libre. Monthly employee contribution: approximately EUR 10-15. Supplementary private top-up insurance: DKV Belgium, AG Insurance.
