Universal Public Health (Sygesikring)
Denmark has a universal public health system (sygesikring) funded through the tax system. All GP visits, specialist referrals, hospital care, and most treatments are free at point of use. Prescriptions are partially subsidised. A yellow health card (sundhedskort) is issued to all registered residents.
Work permit holders who register with the local municipality (kommune) and receive a CPR number (Civil Personal Register number) are enrolled in the public health system within approximately 3 weeks. Dental and some physiotherapy treatments are not fully covered - private supplementary insurance is useful.
Supplementary dental/private insurance: Dansk Sundhedssikring, Tryg Sundhed, Topdanmark Sundhedsforsikring. Monthly cost: DKK 200-500.
