Universal Public Health Insurance (Assurance Maladie)
France operates a universal social health insurance system (Securite Sociale). It reimburses 70-100% of approved medical costs. GP visits, specialist referrals, hospital stays, and prescriptions are covered at subsidised rates.
Salaried workers with a valid work permit are enrolled in Assurance Maladie automatically through payroll contributions. Coverage begins within weeks of starting employment. The PUMA scheme (Protection Universelle Maladie) ensures coverage for all legal residents after 3 months. A complementary mutuelle (top-up insurance) is recommended to cover the 30% co-pay.
Complementary mutuelle providers: Harmonie Mutuelle, MGEN, April Sante, AXA France. Monthly cost for complementary cover: EUR 30-80 for a single person.
