Universal Public Health (Servizio Sanitario Nazionale)
Italy has a universal National Health Service (SSN) funded by regional taxes and contributions. Basic care including GP visits, hospitalisation, and specialist referrals is free or heavily subsidised. A nominal co-payment (ticket) applies for some specialist services.
All employees with a valid residency permit must register with the SSN at the local health authority (ASL) to obtain a health card (tessera sanitaria). Registration requires a tax code (codice fiscale), proof of residence, and employment contract. Coverage begins upon registration.
Supplementary private insurance for faster specialist access: UniSalute, Fasi, Generali Welion, Previmedical. Monthly cost: EUR 30-80.
