Mixed Public/Private - Publicly Subsidised with Private Sector
Malaysia has a public health system administered by the Ministry of Health (MOH). Public hospitals provide very low-cost care (RM 1-5 for outpatient visits). However, quality and waiting times at government hospitals vary. The private sector is well-developed and offers high-quality care at competitive prices.
All legal residents (employment pass holders) can access public government hospitals at subsidised rates. However, the key barrier is waiting times - private hospitals are strongly preferred by most professional expatriates. Many Malaysian employers include group health insurance as part of the employment offer.
Private insurers: AIA Malaysia, Great Eastern Malaysia, Prudential Malaysia, Allianz Malaysia. Monthly individual cost: MYR 150-400.
