Mandatory Private Health Insurance (Zorgverzekering)
The Netherlands requires all residents to purchase a mandatory basic health insurance (basisverzekering) from a private insurer regulated by the government. The benefits package is set by law and covers GP care, hospital care, mental health, and most medications. A healthcare allowance (zorgtoeslag) is available for lower incomes.
Anyone registered as a resident (with a BSN - burger service nummer) is required by law to take out basic health insurance within 4 months of arrival. Insurers cannot refuse applicants for the basic package. The annual own-risk (eigen risico) deductible is EUR 385 (2025). Work permit holders must register with the municipality and obtain a BSN.
Major Dutch insurers: Zilveren Kruis, VGZ, Menzis, CZ, DSW. Monthly cost for basic package: EUR 130-160. Supplementary packages (dental, physiotherapy) add EUR 20-50/month.
