Universal Public Health (Servico Nacional de Saude)
Portugal has a universal National Health Service (SNS) providing free or low-cost healthcare to all residents. GP and specialist visits at health centres (centros de saude) are free or have a nominal fee. Emergency care is universally available.
Work permit holders who register with the Tax Authority (NIF) and register as a resident at the local Junta de Freguesia are entitled to SNS care. You must register at a local health centre to be assigned a GP (medico de familia). Waiting times for non-emergency specialist care can be long - private insurance is recommended.
Private health insurers: Fidelidade Saude, Medis (BCP Group), AdvanceCare, Multicare. Monthly individual cost: EUR 30-70.
