MediShield Life (mandatory) + Medisave (CPF savings)
Singapore's healthcare system combines mandatory insurance (MediShield Life) with a personal medical savings account (Medisave, part of CPF). MediShield Life covers large hospitalisation bills. Medisave can be used for hospitalisation, selected outpatient treatments, and premiums.
Employment Pass and S Pass holders are NOT covered by MediShield Life. Employers must provide medical benefits under the Employment Act. Work permit holders must be covered by medical insurance of at least SGD 15,000/year under the Work Pass conditions.
Private Integrated Shield Plans (IP) top up MediShield Life coverage for Singapore PR/citizens. For EP/S Pass holders, employer-provided group plans or private insurers (Prudential, AIA, Great Eastern, NTUC Income) are the main options. Average cost: SGD 100β250/month for a comprehensive plan.
