Universal Public Health (Sistema Nacional de Salud)
Spain has a universal National Health System (Sistema Nacional de Salud, SNS) funded by general taxation. It provides free healthcare at point of use for all registered residents - GP, specialist, emergency, hospitalisation, and a wide range of medications. Regional governments administer services.
Work permit holders who register on the municipal census (empadronamiento) are entitled to access the SNS. Registration with Social Security (TGSS) through employment also triggers healthcare entitlement. You will be assigned a health centre and family doctor. Bring your NIE (Foreigner Identity Number) and proof of address.
Private health insurance is popular for faster specialist access and English-speaking doctors. Providers: Sanitas (Bupa Spain), Adeslas, Asisa, AXA Spain. Monthly individual cost: EUR 50-120.
