Mandatory Private Health Insurance (LAMal / KVG)
Switzerland has a compulsory private health insurance system under the Federal Health Insurance Act (LAMal). All residents must purchase a basic insurance (Grundversicherung) from a registered private insurer within 3 months of arrival. The basic plan covers GP, specialist, hospital (general ward), and emergency care.
Work permit holders (B/L permits) must enroll in LAMal within 3 months of arrival. Failure to do so results in automatic assignment to an insurer. The annual deductible (Franchise) ranges from CHF 300-2,500 - higher deductibles mean lower monthly premiums. Family members must each have their own policy.
Registered LAMal insurers: Helsana, CSS, Swica, Sanitas, KPT, Assura. Monthly premium for a single adult (minimum deductible): CHF 350-500 depending on canton. Supplementary (VVG) plans for private hospital room and dental: additional CHF 50-150.
