Statutory Health Insurance (GKV) + Private (PKV)
Germany has a dual system. Employees earning below €69,300/year (2025) are automatically enrolled in Statutory Health Insurance (GKV — Gesetzliche Krankenversicherung). Coverage includes doctor visits, hospitalisation, prescriptions, and preventive care. Employer pays 50% of the premium.
Skilled workers on an employment visa are automatically enrolled in GKV from day one of employment. Contribution is approximately 14.6–15.5% of gross salary, split equally between employer and employee. Dependants (spouse, children) are covered for free if not working.
Employees earning above the threshold can opt for Private Krankenversicherung (PKV). Private plans offer shorter waiting times and premium rooms in hospital. Average PKV cost: €350–600/month for a family.
